This idea is challenged in the The Man Who was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton. The main character, Gregory Syme, believes that instead of reason it it intuition. Intuition is the how science builds upon itself. Modern scientific thought claims to be built off the back of reason. The scientific rule itself runs finished a logical course of action; identify a problem, hypothesize a solution, show the solution, examine the results, and rehypothesize if necssary. The problem is that this method has not led to very spelly discoveries. Sciences greatest theories and laws have often been discovered because of intuition, or leaps of faith if you will.
