Materials and Methods
In order for this experiment to be performed we must first follow the instruction manual for the analyzer for assembly, testing, calibration, and operation. We then adjust the machine to the optimum combustion temperature in the lead using it.
We then homogenize our samples and analyze a homogenized blank consisting of reagent water carried through the homogenizing treatment. Remove inorganic carbon from the samples by reducing the pH to 2 or less, and purify with gas for 10 min. Some of the volatile organic carbon can be lost in this process, so recalibrating the TOC is necessary. In order to determine DOC, we filter the sample through a 0.7 glass filter, so that no extra DOC is in the sample. We then take a sample of our samples and inject them into the machine.
