In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge uses a Mariner to tell his story to a detained wedding guest who upon audition vicariously lives out the story. In Michael, Wordsworth uses Luke a young man raised in a pastoral setting who is obligate into the world and becomes conformed by it. The Mariner, wedding guest, and Luke illustrate a life conformed by the world driven to sin, left in a hopelessness, and yet offered natures redemption of the soul.
