Euripides Medea is a hoyden unlike others of its time. Challenging the roles of the definitive submarine and subservient role of women in ancient Hellenic society, Euripides makes a mockery of tragic hero standards and gender roles. Euripides creates a mixed example with Medea, showing traditional heroic qualities, all the period challenging them with her actions. In the opening scenes, we see Medea suffering and then further humiliated by being forced into exile at the hands of Jasons new bride-to-bes father. Before the exit of Creon, Medea is shown solely as a woman of abandonment and woe.
